We're tired of spending so much $$ on scratching pads (which don't last long at our house) and picking up little cardboard bits so we're going to try to make one of these: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=18709 once we come up with a source for suitable sisal sheet-goods.
I'm sure you could construct one in your nice new shop!

Yes, the cardboard doesn't last long, and the bits are an added mess. Let us know if/when you find a source of sisal sheet-goods.

I was actually looking at making my own cat scratcher recently too, and was searching for sisal. I found one source, but it's kind of a grab bag affair. it's the left over bits from a rug manufacturer.

Shy of buying bulk, the only other source of woven sisal fabric I've found is some places that will do a custom sisal rug for you, but that gets remarkably expensive very fast.
